This time of year everyone is spreading the love. So while you’re buying out the candy store and writing sappy love poems for your less-significant other, why not just take it easy and give your cat love instead. I promise it will be cheaper and a whole lot less fattening!
I’ve already discussed how your sweet feline shows you a little love. Well, my friends. It’s time to reciprocate. Here are six ways you can show your cat love.
I’m a fierce jungle cat. And so is your feline friend. I don’t care if they are 18 weeks or 18 years. We are natural born hunters and killers. It’s what we live for. Don’t let the long stretches of sleepy time fool you. All kitties need to get the zoomies out every once in a while. Toys to bat around, laser pointers, cat climbers, and even brofurs and sisfurs can all be an important part of any play routine. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, replaces one-on-one play time with the humans. This should be a few minutes set aside every day where you have the honor of finding your kitty’s favorite toy and zipping it around like prey. So put that phone down, turn off Netflix, and start your best mouse impression.
Admittedly, dear furriends, this one really sucks. But, since my Mom is a vet, she wouldn’t let me post this without including this one. *Sigh* Vets aren’t just for sick pets and vaccines. Cats (and dogs, for that matter) need a good checkup at least once a year. And the older guys need it more often than that! We all know that felines are little furry ninjas, so we are super skilled at hiding any illness. Veterinarians are there to try to uncover any issue before it becomes a major problem. I know the carriers are nothing more than Hell Traps and the vet clinics are torture chambers. But, remember, my furriends. If your human puts you through that nightmare every once in a while, it is only because they love you.
This one may not be for every kitty. But cats that have the right temperament (bold and curious with an affinity for the outdoors) can be safely taught to be adventure cats. While kittens are surely quicker to adjust to a harness, any cat can learn to walk on a leash. With a little practice and lots of praise, you’ll find that little outdoor outings can be a wonderful way to bond. And it’s the perfect way for me to get some serious bug chasing in, I might add. Just please remember, dear friends, leaving a cat outside without a leash can be very dangerous. So get that harness and leash on, and go outside together for an adventure!
You can watch a video of me taking my mom on a leash walk here.
We felines show our humans affection in many different ways. From cuddles to rubs to the widely recognized slow blink (yeah, that one’s not for me), we know how to bless our humans with cat love. So, if you want to let your kitty know you care, just take a page from our book (no, wait, I was sleeping on that). For sighted kitties, blink your eyes a few times slowly, and watch in amazement as they respond in kind. That is, unless the food bowl is less than half full. In that case, you may just get a cold stare in return. But I digress.
Head bonks and nose to tail rubs are fantastic for spreading some love. And who of us kitties haven’t had a profound conversation with our humans? Kitties typically reserve their most talkative selves for their dear human companions. So why not give us a little chatter back?
Really, who doesn’t love a good nap? In my opinion, humans do not seem to take full advantage of their sleeping opportunities like we do. So what better way is there to say “I love you” than with a good cuddle session and a nap. Even if the human doesn’t want to sleep (which is obviously ridiculous), just provide us with a warm lap to sleep on, and we are best friends forever. Well, at least, that is, until you get up to pee.
Ok, if I’m being honest, this hurts me just a little to say it. But I suppose it’s true. Too often humans associate food with affection or comfort. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love my treats! But your kitty will love you just as much, whether or not you constantly shower her with treats. Unfortunately, too many treats come at a high cost. Obesity, leading to all sorts of health problems like diabetes and early death, is becoming an epidemic. Cats are designed to hunt and catch their prey. We don’t need kitty candy bars floating around every time we do something cute. Seriously, isn’t that all the time? Love may hurt, but it doesn’t have to make you sick! For real, people. Just don’t be that guy.
If you are blessed to share your home with a wonderful feline companion, make sure you let them know every day how much they are loved. Because no matter how many times she may lay on your computer and delete your work or knock over your glass of water, there is no other love like cat love. And, most certainly, The more love you give away, the more will come back to you.
Until next time… Keeping Pebbles Strong!

Most excellent advice, Pebbles. And while the part about not showing love through food hurts to hear, its very true. We had a diabetic brother named Buddy who needed insulin for ten years before he went OTRB at the age of 24. While he lived an extraordinary long time, it was due to our mom walking him every day, and traveling with him so he could get insulin shots twice a day. We also loved the part about taking naps. Speaking of which…ZZZz Herman and Dori

No doubt about it, giving your fur kids TIME is especially important. Hoomons get all up in their own business with daily life stresses, and us fur kids tend to get a pat on the head and that’s about it. Quality time is so important, even in multi-pet households where we have to draw straws to figure out who gets to have Mom while she’s drinking coffee and watching the news…to who gets to crawl into bed at night. Purrs!
